Keto high-protein snacks and shakes: how to read the label
By Nashua Nutrition Editorial · Last reviewed September 2026
Quick answer: Keto high-protein snacks and shakes that fit a plan tend to share a few traits. They show low Estimated Net Carbs per serving and a fair amount of protein. Four lines on the label tell you most of it: serving size, net carbs, protein, and sweetener. Snack carbs add up with the rest of your day. For context, Cleveland Clinic says keto eating stays under 50 grams of carbohydrates a day.
Some days there's no time to cook. A meeting runs long, the drive home drags, or you want something sweet after dinner. Those are the moments a keto plan can feel hard. Having a snack ready before the moment arrives makes it simpler.
This is the shopping side of our guide to what to eat on keto. It covers the label and a few savory, sweet, and drinkable options. It also explains why some low-carb bars aren't in our keto collections.
What to check on a keto snack or shake label
The FDA's guide to the Nutrition Facts label is a helpful place to start. Our guide to net carbs vs total carbs walks through a label line by line. Here are the five things many keto shoppers look at first.
- Serving size. The FDA explains that every number on the label is for one serving. If you eat two servings, you double the numbers.
- Net carbs per serving. On our site, net carbs are total carbs minus fiber and sugar alcohols. We show them as Estimated Net Carbs on each product.
- Protein per serving. MedlinePlus says protein helps your body repair cells and make new ones. The snacks in this guide carry 12 to 15 g each.
- The sweetener. Read the ingredient list, not only the front of the box. Cleveland Clinic lists sugar alcohol names to look for, such as erythritol, sorbitol, and maltitol.
- Our keto sorting. In our store, keto-strict means 3 g or less of Estimated Net Carbs per serving. Keto-standard means 6 g or less. Neither includes a product whose main sweetener is maltitol. These are our shopping filters, worked out from each label. They're not a medical standard.
Estimated net carbs based on the nutrition label. Actual net carbs may vary based on manufacturer claims for sugar alcohols and other low-glycemic ingredients.
You can browse by filter in our keto-strict and keto-standard collections. Our keto food guide has the full table.
Savory keto snacks for your desk or bag
For many people, crunch is what they miss most. One customer said in a review that they don't crave sweets, but they do want chips and crunch.
A small bag is easy to plan around. MedlinePlus suggests planning ahead and bringing your own snacks to work. One bag of Proti-Thin sea salt and vinegar protein chips has 15 g protein and 3 g Estimated Net Carbs. It fits in a desk drawer, a lunch bag, or a coat pocket.
Chips can do more than sit in a bowl, too. One reviewer crumbles the sea salt and vinegar chips over a salad for salt and crunch. Want a second flavor? A bag of dill pickle protein chips has the same 15 g protein and 3 g Estimated Net Carbs. Both flavors sit in our keto-strict collection.
Sweet keto snacks for an after-dinner craving
Wanting something sweet is normal. It doesn't mean anything went wrong. Having a sweet option ready just means you don't have to figure it out in the moment.
- Something light. A packet of Proti-Thin strawberry banana protein gelatin has 15 g protein and 1 g Estimated Net Carbs. It needs about two hours in the fridge to set, so some people make it after lunch.
- Something creamy. A packet of Weight Loss Systems custard toffee protein pudding has 12 g protein and 6 g Estimated Net Carbs. It mixes with cold water in a few minutes.
- Something to carry. A bag of Proti-thin chocolate soy snacks has 15 g protein and 6 g Estimated Net Carbs. It's a chocolate snack for sweet cravings away from home.
The pudding and the soy snacks sit in our keto-standard collection, and the gelatin in keto-strict.
Drinkable keto protein for breakfast on the go
Mornings are often the rushed part of the day. A drink you can grab from the fridge takes one step out of it.
A Proti-Thin chocolate ready-to-drink protein shake needs no mixing at all. Each 250 ml drink has 15 g protein and 2 g Estimated Net Carbs, and it sits in keto-strict.
If you'd rather mix your own, one packet of Weight Loss Systems dark chocolate pudding and shake works two ways. For a shake, the box says to stir it into 8 ounces of cold water. For a pudding, use 4 ounces. Each packet has 15 g protein and 6 g Estimated Net Carbs.
Cleveland Clinic calls a protein shake a great option to replace a snack between meals. If you're wondering about a shake in place of a meal, see the questions below.
Why some low-carb bars aren't in our keto collections
You may spot a bar that says low carb but isn't in our keto collections. Most of the time, the reason is the sweetener.
Our keto filters leave out any product whose main sweetener is maltitol, even when the net carbs look low. Maltitol is a sugar alcohol. It's one of the names Cleveland Clinic lists to look for on an ingredient list. In our store data from September 2026, 29 of our 275 active products list maltitol as the main sweetener. Most of them are bars, and none of them is in our keto collections. They sit in our low-carb collection instead.

Keto snacks that don't taste chalky
Taste matters. A snack you don't enjoy tends to sit in the cupboard. "Doesn't taste chalky" and "not too sweet" are two things people often tell us they look for.
Here's how customers have described the options above in their reviews:
- The protein chips: "Salty, zesty, crunchy, filling."
- The chocolate ready-to-drink shake: "Smooth and creamy with no aftertaste of protein."
- The dark chocolate pudding and shake: "This dark chocolate shake is great tasting."
- The custard toffee pudding: "Quick and easy to mix."
Some people find a few small changes help with texture:
- Chill it. Some reviewers say a pudding tastes better made ahead and chilled for a few hours.
- Adjust the water. Less water makes a thicker pudding. More water makes a lighter shake.
- Add ice. A shake poured over ice can taste fresher.
- Rotate flavors. Two or three flavors on hand keep one from wearing out.
If a flavor doesn't work for you, that's useful to know. Tastes differ, and trying one bag or one small box first keeps it low-stakes.
Key takeaway: check four lines, then plan for your moments
Serving size, Estimated Net Carbs, protein, and sweetener tell you most of what a snack label says. From there, think about your day. One savory snack, one sweet one, and one drink cover most busy moments. Start with a single bag or a small box and see what you enjoy.

Frequently asked questions
Can a protein shake replace a meal on keto?
Some people use a shake for breakfast on a busy morning. It helps to know what's in it, though. Our chocolate ready-to-drink shake has 110 calories and 15 g protein. That's closer to a snack than a full meal. Some people pair a shake with other foods from their plan, such as eggs or cheese. If you're thinking of swapping meals for shakes often, talk it over with your healthcare provider first.
Can you eat protein bars on keto?
Many people do. Bars differ more from each other than you might expect, so the label is where the answer is. A bar with 6 g Estimated Net Carbs fits keto-standard but not keto-strict. If you count more strictly, a few bars do qualify, and our keto-strict collection shows them.
Which keto snacks travel well without a fridge?
Protein chips are the easiest, since each bag is sealed and single-serve. Pudding and shake packets are flat and light, and they only take water and a cup. Bars travel well in a bag, but some can soften in heat. In warm weather, some people keep bars in an insulated lunch bag. For ready-to-drink shakes, check the box for how to store them once opened.
Is sugar-free pudding or gelatin keto?
"Sugar-free" and "low in net carbs" aren't the same thing, so it's worth checking both lines. A pudding can have little sugar and still carry carbs from starch or milk. Our strawberry banana protein gelatin has 0 g sugar and 1 g Estimated Net Carbs. Our custard toffee pudding has 3 g sugar and 6 g Estimated Net Carbs. Both fit our keto sorting, just at different levels.
