National Nutrition Month: Adopt a Nutritious Style

National Nutrition Month (NNM) is a campaign on education and information regarding nutrition. Created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, NNM is being celebrated in March this year with emphasis put on the choices of food we eat, the importance of making good food choices, sound eating habits, as well as physical activity regimes. NNM is simply meant to remind people about the benefits of healthy eating and adopting a healthy and nutritious lifestyle. It also aims at celebrating registered Dietitian Nutritionists and their contributions.

Most people know about the importance of eating healthy, but many do not put it into practice. Many opt to reach for processed and sugary foods instead of healthy ones. There are also many people who choose not to engage in physical activity, thus, their bodies are not getting the exercise needed to really reach optimal health. Adopting healthy eating habits has significant benefits, including:

Prevents Diseases

Mortality rate has highly increased due to diseases such as heart failure, diabetes, and stroke, so prevention of such diseases is quite important. By adopting a healthy diet and exercising regularly, you can help prevent health concerns like arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis, cardiovascular diseases, and other illnesses that are as a result of poor dietary choices lifestyles.

Boosts your Energy

Eating healthy food is not only about avoiding being thin or losing weight, but rather more about having energy and being healthy. Smart eating styles are what you eat, as well as how you eat. Healthy eating is beneficial in that it boosts levels of energy in the body, helping you to feel better each day and have the energy to perform your necessary activities, as well as to exercise.

Weight Control

A well-balanced diet, high intake of fruits & vegetables, and avoiding processed and low-fat foods help you maintain and lose weight. Whether you want to lose five or fifty pounds, concentrating on implementing a healthy diet and exercise regimen into your life will be very beneficial for you.

Happier Disposition

When you choose healthier foods, you will ultimately feel better physically and mentally. You’ll feel proud of yourself and happier in general, as the foods we eat affect us both physically and mentally. For example, if you reach for a banana for breakfast instead of a donut, you’ll feel proud of yourself and this will help you feel happier. If you reach for the donut, you may feel bad later on for choosing an unhealthy option.

Take the month of March to really begin making better food choices and begin exercising on a regular basis. You’ll find that your choices will start becoming habitual and within a short amount of time, you’ll simply feel better all the way around.
